The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in the year 2009 at the very inception of Dr. Sudhir Chandra Sur Degree Engineering College. The department started with a 4 years B.Tech course (Capacity 120 Students) and later on, M.Tech programme in Mechanical engineering with specialization in Manufacturing Technology (Capacity 18 Students) came into being in 2012. Mechanical engineering is one of the most sought-after core streams of engineering disciplines with multidisciplinary fields of work. The department is flourished with excellent laboratory facilities with a wide range of learning facilities, high quality teaching and laboratory staff. The Department stress upon all round development of the students by personal interaction between the staff and students beyond stipulated working hours and available for guidance even after they have passed out of the college. The Department aims at producing employable engineers who are capable of contributing meaningfully to the society.

In DSCSDEC we have all the B.Tech and M.Tech laboratory facilities as per WBUT syllabus. Existing laboratory are,

  • Applied Mechanics Laboratory
  • Material Testing Laboratory
  • Fluid Mechanics & Hydraulic Machines Laboratory
  • Applied Thermodynamics & Heat Transfer Laboratory
  • Metrology & Measurement Laboratory
  • Dynamics of Machines Laboratory
  • Machining & Machine Tools Laboratory
  • Advanced Manufacturing Technology Laboratory
  • Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Laboratory
  • Manufacturing Technology Laboratory
  • Mechanical Workshop
  • Pattern shop & Fitting Shop
  • Engineering Drawing & Computer Graphics
  • CAD (Design) Laboratory
  • IC Engine Lab (interdisciplinary)

Mechanical Engineering students undergo training programmes and internship in various industries / organizations like Burn Standard, various Railway Workshops, Ordnance Factories, Indian Oil, SAIL, Pinnacle Honda, and industrial units in Kolkata, Durgapur, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad and industrial cities/township in India during vacation period. They are also encouraged to join defence forces for start-up projects to generate employment after graduation.

The Department has a small but extremely active group of research & industry experienced seniors and who continuously inspire young faculty members. All the staff share a passion for a range of new and emergent topics in mechanical engineering. Faculty members effectively organize seminars, conferences on emerging technologies throughout the year. They also have a number of research publications and conference papers to their credit and thus fresh and inquisitive minds of students are nurtured to inculcate the habit of researches, innovations and paper publications. They are also encouraged to go for higher studies, appear for UPSC and GATE examinations.

A lecture on Tungsten Carbide Inserted Tools, Non-standard Cutting Tools, their Design & Development : Emerging Technologies delivered by Mr Subrata Sen, ex-Associate Vice President of Nickunj Eximp Enterprise Ltd. on 23 Mar 2017. It was attended by all students (PG & UG) of Mechanical Engineering Department including the staff. The lecture was well appreciated and created tremendous impact on the students as was evident from Question & Answer Sessions conducted at the final session of the lecture.
