Civil Engineering is one of the core branches of engineering. It is the second oldest engineering branch. It is an engineering discipline that focuses on design, planning, construction and maintenance of physically built as well as natural environment.

It is a very diverse field, consisting of various sub branches. Dams, roads, buildings, canals etc are examples of physically built structures.

When we think about civil engineering, the first thing that comes to our mind is buildings! But civil engineers do more than just designing and constructing buildings! Civil engineers have the potential to work across various industries that require construction.


Diploma in Civil Engineering is a 3 years long program. It follows the semester system of learning. Each academic year is divided into two semesters, with each semester lasting for a period of 6 months.During the course of study, the student is exposed to various subjects of Civil Engineering such as Planning, Drafting (both manual and computer –aided), Surveying, Estimation & Costing, Construction Technology, Basics of Highway, Railway, Bridge, Airport, Tunnel and Harbour Engineering. The course also offers adequate exposure to Reinforced Concrete Structures, Quality Control, Material Testing, Construction Management & Entrepreneurship, Professional Practice and Office Procedures. Students also get a feel of Extensive Survey, Building Drawing, Irrigation & Bridge Drawing and Structural Engineering Drawing. Students are also exposed to software like AUTOCAD & STAAD.


Civil engineering is a core engineering branch. It is an evergreen branch. This means that ample amounts of job opportunities are available in front of civil engineering professionals!

Government sector jobs are available in various Central and State Government departments.Some such well known recruiters are-

Candidates must pass Higher Secondary (10+2) Examination of West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education or equivalent examination from a Council / Board recognized by the State Government / Central Government concerned, with Individual pass marks in Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with (Chemistry / Biotechnology / Biology / Computer Science / Computer Application) having minimum of 45% marks in the above subjects taken together (40% for Reserve Category candidates) as well as pass in English with a minimum of 30% marks (for all categories of candidates) in the said qualifying examination.

Diploma holders with good grade may make use of lateral entry and join B.E./B.Tech. Civil Engineering program’s 2nd academic year (directly). This way, Diploma holders may make the ‘DtoD’ switch and earn a Bachelor of Engineering/Technology Degree!
